To understand who we are, it is important to know that we believe that God is the creator of all that exists (Genesis 1 & 2 Psalm 136:5-9) and as creator he is ultimate authority. The Bible is God’s inspired word given to man (2 Timothy 3:16). We believe the Bible is able to save the soul of man when it is studied and applied (Romans 1:16).
Over 300 Messianic Prophecies all point to one man, Jesus. God does not want any soul to be lost (2 Peter 3:9) and that is why he sent His Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). Jesus came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10; Ephesians 5:2). In Acts 2 we first read that the “Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved” (Acts 2:47). Since the Church is where the saved are added that is where all men should want to be. However, what is the Church? Ephesians 5:23 says that “…Christ is the head of the Church: and he is the savior of the body” and further down it explains more by saying “…I speak concerning Christ and the Church” (vs. 32). Simply put the Church is the body of Christ in which the saved are added for Christ is the savior of the body (cf. 1 Corinthians 12:27).
In Acts 2 when the Church was established there was only one church (one Christ only one body). As time has gone by grievous wolves have entered in and made havoc of the Church (Acts 20:29). This has happened due to people’s love for this world (2 Tim. 4:10; 1 Jn. 2:15-17), men wanting to promote self (3 John 1:9), not wanting to hear what God says instead preaching only what they want to hear (2 Tim. 4:3, 4). This has caused: religious division, different teachings coming from the same Bible, corruption on many different levels and ultimately discouragement to many who want to be pleasing to God, but are confused as to what is the truth. This is certainly, not what God wanted because he admonished us to “all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10).
At the Ackerman Church of Christ we strive not to be a “denomination” but simply the New Testament Church that you can read of in the Bible. Some attack and say this is arrogant, but it is not. This requires humbling one’s self to the teachings of the New Testament. Certainly God (who is love) would not expect us to be a part of something (the Church) and do something (not be divided) if it was not possible. The only way this is possible is if we humble ourselves to the authority of Christ (Matthew 28:19 “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” Ephesians 5:23 “He is the Head of the Church”). This means that we simply do as the Christians (church) did in the New Testament.
We call ourselves Ackerman Church of Christ to identify who we are. We are the Church (body of believers) that belongs to Christ meeting in Ackerman, MS. We do not need to identify with any other man or creed. We know this is pleasing to God and authorized because when Paul (through inspiration) wrote to Rome he penned, “…the Churches of Christ salute you” (Romans 16:16). We know that those who followed Christ in the New Testament called themselves Christians (Acts 11:26). So we are simply Christians. We don’t call ourselves anything else, for that will only divide. Besides, why would one want to call themselves anything other than something that promotes the one that died for them (1 Cor. 1:12, 13)?
We believe that as Christians we are to encourage each other, teach others about the God’s word and help our fellow man when he is need.
